Job Overview

Are you a problem solver with a passion for data modelling and designing scalable prototypes? As a Senior Data Scientist, you will be the BCSC’s data modelling specialist as you apply your deep technical knowledge to design, develop, and validate prototypes and monitor their implementation. In this role, you will have the opportunity to challenge yourself technically while also making an impact by evaluating current business processes and identifying opportunities to introduce data analytics and/or use data more effectively.

The BCSC is currently using Microsoft Azure to prototype a number of use cases that support business priorities and is looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join their dynamic team. During your first year, you will focus on familiarizing yourself with existing model prototypes and the current sandbox environment. You will take ownership of data science activities as we make these models available to BCSC staff.

Once most of these models are promoted to production, your focus will be on monitoring and maintaining production-level models as well as on designing and developing new models prioritized by the BCSC’s business units. You will also have the flexibility to define your career growth to align with your interests by being involved in other BCSC project work and exploring new, potentially valuable data sets.

As the BCSC’s Senior Data Scientist, you have time to dig deep into data modelling as you build practical solutions to challenging business problems. Throughout your career, you will support the business by communicating data insights in a concise, straightforward, manner that can be relied upon to guide strategic decisions.

Main Responsibilities

Develop and iterate on technical components of new models. Key activities include: Designing model prototypes that relate to BCSC-approved use cases Designing basic BI dashboards to allow users to evaluate prototyped models Using experiments to iterate on models Measuring model performance and advising the BCSC on benefits and risks of promoting specific models to production Supporting the Data Analysts and the Technology & Project Services team to promote models to production Engaging in knowledge-specific quality assurance testing Communicating complex technical solutions to non-technical audiences using plain language Working with the Economic Analysis (EA) unit to prioritize new use cases that require more specialized data science work Iterate on existing models, with a focus on monitoring performance of production-level models and building on models to improve performance Collaborate with the business to translate business needs into technical solutions and advise business leads developing use cases on the feasibility of potential work and data required for prospective work Participate in, and advise on, future procurements for advanced analytics services Act as a guide to the business, using your advanced technical skills to address prioritized problems Qualifications

The qualifications of a successful candidate include:

Combination of 8 -10 years of related academic and work experience including 2+ years of relevant technical work experience, and a degree (Master’s degree preferred) or Certification in Data Science, Quantitative Analysis, Computer Science or related field or an equivalent combination of experience and education Experience working in Securities, Financial Services is an asset Deep technical knowledge of model development and rigorous commitment to ensuring model quality Demonstrated expertise building models from use cases and modifying existing models Additional experience operationalizing prototypes is an asset General understanding of Advanced Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Cognitive Data Extraction, Natural Language Processing (NPL), and Quantitative Modelling Familiarity with Model Monitoring and Model and Data Versioning Able to drive results, meet deadlines, and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision Confident communicator, both orally and in writing, with professionalism to manage stakeholder expectations If you believe your experience and technical skills are transferable to this role and you are interested in continuing to grow your skill set, we encourage you to submit an application.
